If you are reading this then it is fair to assume you want to know how to lose weight. This is one of the most frequently asked questions, even though the scientific answer is very simple; just eat fewer calories than you burn. Basically, if you use 3000 calories in a day and you eat 2500 calories then you will lose weight.

On paper that is easy as 1,2,3. In real life that is far from the case, knowing exactly how many calories you have eaten and how many you burn can seem like calculus sometimes. Even with nutrition details on the back of every product and the increase in heart rate and calorie monitors it is still a challenge.

Slim people offer terrible advice

The natural thing to do when seeking advice on how to lose weight is to ask someone who is slim and in shape. This is a big mistake, alot of slim people don’t understand the first thing about losing weight. Most have been slim their whole life and never had to diet to get to their current weight. Some are also blessed with great genetics and metabolic rates. We all know that slim person that eats like a starving donkey and doesn’t seem to gain a pound of fat.

Food that makes you get fat faster, tastes so good

What makes things worse is that the best tasting foods are what makes you get fat faster. KFC, McDonald’s, Ice Cream, candy etc. they all taste amazing but they are not good for six-pack abs, unfortunately.I guess that is life in general, anything that is fun and exciting in the short term always seems to hurt down the road. Luckily, you do not have to give up on fast food forever and eat salads for the rest of your life with intermittent fasting.

This is not to be confused with starving yourself

A simple definition of intermittent fasting is; taking turns to eat and go without food in an organised manner. This is not to be confused with starving yourself! We do not promote anorexia or any other eating disorders as healthy ways how to lose weight. There are lots of different cycles to use such as the Atkins diet, but I will only tell you what has worked for me.

eat for 8 hours and fast for 16 hours

Some diets plans can be extreme for beginners, some even recommend going an entire day without food. I think these are too hardcore for most people, especially those that are overweight and use to eating alot. Instead, I use and recommend the eat for 8 hours and fast for 16 hours cycle. This cycle was what I followed to lose over 30 pounds, safely. Unlike my previous diets, I did not gain the weight back as fast as I lost it. Eating only in a small 8-hour window became a lifestyle for me.

The hours that you choose to fast and eat are completely up to you. I start eating at lunchtime (12 pm) and I stop eating the latest 8 pm. all my meals are eaten in this time frame. Some people claim you can eat as much as you want and not gain weight this way, but that is not true. What it does offer is more flexibility for you to not eat as strict as you would with eating all day.

Eating whenever you feel like is fairly new to human beings. Our ancestors would just eat big meals and then not eat until the next big meal. There were no refrigerators back then, so you couldn’t put food in the fridge and eat later. This way of eating helps your body break down food more efficiently.

Anytime you eat a meal, your body goes through a complex process of breaking down the food and converting it to energy/store for fat. This process is quite taxing on your body’s internal systems. your body uses about 10% of the calories you eat, just to break down the food Calorie Breakdown Facts This means if you eat 3000 calories, 300 those are used just to digest the food.

can help to reduce your chances of getting diabetes

When you eat all day, you make this process more taxing on the body. Your digestive system is constantly breaking down food and has no time to rest. The body gets very little time to repair its cells or strengthen itself. Intermittent fasting allows the body to have more than half a days rest to carry out these important functions. Not to mention the fact that fasting helps to lower insulin resistance, something that continues to be overlooked even though diabetes is rampant in modern societies.

The 16 hour period that you are going without food, you are still being active. You are walking, working, climbing stairs etc. Your body does not have any immediate energy source, so it turns to fat. Now you are literally burning fat as that is what your body turns to when it has used up its primary energy source, which is carbohydrates. This is alot harder to do when eating normally as you are constantly replenishing your body with carbs, so it never needs to start burning fat.
